Commercial Demonstration Project of 70 MPa Type IV Carbon Fiber Composite Hydrogen Storage System

Project Overview

This project targets hydrogen refueling stations, heavy-duty hydrogen fuel cell trucks and intercity passenger vehicles, adopting the company’s self-developed complete 70 MPa Type IV carbon fiber composite hydrogen storage system to fully resolve industry pain points of conventional steel cylinders, such as excessive dead weight, low hydrogen storage density and insufficient safety margin.

Each hydrogen storage unit features a seamless polymer plastic liner and an outer shell fabricated via the proprietary multi-layer gradient winding and curing process of basalt carbon fiber. All winding formulas, staged temperature curing processes and bottle neck sealing structures are proprietary core technologies independently developed by the enterprise, without reliance on external materials or manufacturing techniques.

The complete hydrogen storage system operates at a standard working pressure of 70 MPa with a gravimetric hydrogen storage density of up to 5.35%. It maintains stable long-term operation within a temperature range of -45°C to 120°C and has passed a full set of third-party safety tests including hydrostatic burst, mechanical impact, fire exposure and fatigue cycling, with a safety factor of 2.2.

The cylinders deliver remarkable lightweight advantages: the overall weight is only one-third of traditional Type I steel cylinders under the same hydrogen storage capacity. Two configurations, single cylinders and multi-cylinder integrated skids, are available to meet diverse demands of heavy trucks, buses and hydrogen refueling stations. Stationary hydrogen storage skids for refueling stations are equipped with a full intelligent safety control system integrating pressure buffering, real leakage monitoring and automatic overpressure relief, enabling unattended 24-hour safe operation.

The project is supported by complete special equipment manufacturing qualifications and factory inspection reports for pressure vessels, which can be used for filing and formal operation of hydrogen refueling stations and commercial hydrogen vehicles across all provinces and municipalities in China.

  2. Structural matching and airtight pipeline integration for vehicle-mounted hydrogen storage assemblies
  3. Design, installation and safety interlock commissioning of stationary hydrogen storage skid systems for hydrogen refueling stations
  4. Long-term maintenance services including annual pressure resistance inspection, pipeline maintenance and sensor replacement
  5. Specialized training for operators on safety specifications and emergency response protocols

Project Outputs & Value

This project serves as a comprehensive urban hydrogen refueling demonstration station equipped with multiple sets of 70 MPa hydrogen storage skids to provide stable high-pressure hydrogen buffering storage for hydrogen fuel cell trucks and buses, while supplying batches of vehicle-mounted hydrogen cylinders to local logistics fleets.

Compared with conventional 35 MPa steel hydrogen storage equipment, the driving range per single hydrogen refuel for each vehicle nearly doubles, and the volumetric utilization rate of hydrogen storage at refueling stations is greatly improved. The domestically produced carbon fiber hydrogen storage equipment boasts lower procurement and operation & maintenance costs than imported counterparts, with no compliance obstacles throughout the project implementation process.

As a standardized demonstration of urban commercial high-pressure hydrogen storage, the project provides a mature domestic supporting solution for national hydrogen refueling networks and hydrogen-powered heavy truck transformation projects.
